Abstract: Cell microencapsulation is a widely studied approach for the immunoprotection of transplanted insulin-producing cells, using semipermeable biomaterial membranes to isolate cells from the host immune system while allowing the transport of essential molecules such as nutrients, glucose, and insulin. At the Department of Biomaterials Research at the Polymer Institute SAS, our research focuses on the development and characterization of biopolymer-based microencapsulation systems, from material synthesis and microcapsule formation to in vitro and in vivo evaluation.
This presentation will introduce current strategies for diabetes treatment and our research approach to biopolymer-based cell encapsulation, highlighting the potential of automated image analysis for more efficient and standardized evaluation.
